ROYAL HISTORY AND GAUDÍ ARCHITECTURE

Barcelona

Baixada del Monestir, 9, 08034 Barcelona

The origins of the Pedralbes Royal Palace date back to a traditional 17th-century farmhouse. It was remodelled several times during the 19th and early 20th centuries, notably by Catalan architects Joan Martorell i Montells, who built a small Caribbean-style palace and Gothic-style chapel; and Antoni Gaudí, who also partially designed the magnificent gardens. The property was gifted to the Spanish Royal Family by owner Count Eusebi Güell in 1918, becoming and remaining a royal palace until 1931. Today the Palau Reial de Pedralbes houses the Museu de la Ceramica (Ceramic Museum), Museu Tèxtil i d'Indumentària (Textile and Clothing Museum) and Museu de les Arts Decoratives (Decorative Arts Museum). It is also the permanent seat of the Union for the Mediterranean.
