Vecchio Semaforo - Capo Figari

The Vecchio Semaforo (the old stoplight) is a fortress anciently used by the Italian Navy, built on the hillside of Capo Figari. It is on the very terrace of the rounded-shape tower – now abandoned just like the contiguous dorm used by the marines – on which Guglielmo Marconi first experimented long-distance radio communication. On August 11th, 1932, the Nobel Prize winner used microwaves to communicate with Rocca di Papa, close to Rome, using as a link the boat Elettra sailing in the nearby Aranci Gulf. To clearly feel the frequency of the sun and sea, an hour and a half walk will take you to the summit of the “old stoplight”, and a unique overlook including the islet of Figarolo, Tavolara, and the Gulf of Marinella.
