STRONG AS A TOWER
Bergamo
Gombito Tower - Via Gombito 13
Who would have thought that in the past the Gombito Tower on the crossroads of San Lorenzo, Mario Lupo and via Gombito nearly fell down on a few occasions?
The imposing tower made of sandstone blocks is 64 metres high and was nearly 52 metres, when in the nineteenth century a part of it was knocked down because it was declared unsafe.
At the end of the nineteenth century the tower was donated to the council which began a succession of restoration work on it including the steps and the interior spaces, which lasted into the first decades of the twentieth century.
Now the Gombito tower, which means crossroads in Latin and elbow in Bergamasque dialect, stands mighty and solemn.
