THE SPY WHO LOVED HIM

Vittel

Gare de Vittel / place de la Marne

In 1916, Vadim Maslov, a young Russian officer serving in the French Army, was wounded in combat and transferred to a military hospital in Vittel. Located on the front line, the spa town was only accessible to civilians with a pass. Meanwhile in Paris, an influential woman in love with Maslov was willing to do anything to see him again. Her name was Mata Hari, and, under the codename H-21, she was an agent of the German intelligence services. To obtain the sought-after authorisation to enter Vittel, she made a pact with the head of French counterespionage. It turned out to be a risky negotiation that hastened her demise. In 1917, the beautiful spy was found guilty of treason and shot. A century later, it’s impossible to stop in Vittel station without thinking about the tragic fate of this original Bond girl who fell madly in love.
