The bottomless well

Villeneuve-sur-Lot

Grotte de Lastournelle 1851, route des Grottes de Lastournelle, 47300 Sainte-Colombe-de-Villeneuve

In 1878, farmers of the Lot valley began digging a new well to supply the town with water. But their efforts didn't yield the expected result. Ten metres underground, it wasn't a spring they found but rather a gigantic cave: one that stretched for some 300 metres lined with stalactites, stalagmites and other calcite crystals. Here's the irony of the story: there is a natural spring at the bottom of the immense hole, but it wasn't discovered until much later. Today this cave is open to visitors. Simply take the D118 and drive about 10 km from Villeneuve.
