So, what are those corridors that wind under our feet in Metz? Below the grounds of the old town, a network of seven tunnels was dug by the German army during the summer of 1943. A seemingly unfinished project, the tunnels and their purpose remain a mystery. Indeed, the city already had anti-aircraft shelters, none of the passages reaches a strategic position and, besides, they’re not even large enough for a battalion to move around in... In the end, after years of failing to understand their purpose, the entrance to the tunnels was barricaded to protect against the risk of landslides. Today, the passageways remain as impenetrable as their secrets.
