A PAGODA ON THE EDGE OF A FIELD

Marne-la-Vallée

3 allée Madame de Montespan

No, you’re not dreaming. This huge cube of glass, wood and concrete sitting on the edge of a field is indeed a pagoda. In fact, at 7,000m², it’s the largest Buddhist temple in Europe. The Taiwanese Pagoda Fo Guang Shan opened in 2012 and is home to nuns, tourists and visitors from around the world in need of relaxation. Enter the great hall of prayer and take in the white jade Buddha of Burma, whose throne, with a height of five metres and weighing eight tonnes, had to be installed before the roof since it could not pass through the doors! Not only a place of worship, the temple is also a place of cultural exchange where you can learn Chinese or calligraphy, browse a book about Buddhism in the library, or simply enjoy the tea room and vegetarian restaurant. A truly Zen place where Buddha welcomes you with open arms!
