A BRETON CURRY

Lorient

13 place Alsace Lorraine

In Lorient, chefs know: the pharmacy is the only place to get a secret ingredient, ‘Kari Gosse’. Under this mysterious moniker is a mixture of spices – ‘kari’ means curry in Tamil – invented by pharmacist Edmond Gosse around 1890. It all began in the 17th century. This Breton city was the seat of the Compagnie des Indes, which chartered vessels on the seven seas to bring back precious goods, including porcelain, silk and spices. Two centuries later, our local pharmacist developed a special curry mix in his dispensary using turmeric, pepper, cinnamon and a few other choice ingredients. Unfortunately, we can’t say more: the recipe is 100% secret. This condiment appeals to all the senses – a pleasure to the eyes with its ochre colour, to the nose with its captivating scent, and to taste buds with its spicy flavour. Today, it’s a highly sought-after ingredient that goes perfectly with lobster.
