Fancy heading off the beaten track? You can, so long as you’re ready to head deep down below Limoges. Discovered in the 1960s, this mini-city, called Les Souterrains de la Règle, is made up of paths and arcades dating back to the 10th century. How to explain its presence? No one really knows what the networked tunnels were used for, but there are several opposing theories. One rather gruesome idea is that the druids carried out human sacrifices here. If you wish to explore the subterannean passageways, one section is open to the public. Head to the cathedral for guided tours – reservations are required. You enter the underground tunnels by a little back door. Afterwards, stop by the Jardins de l’Évêché (Bishop’s Garden).
