A FLASHBACK TO THE 80S

Forbach

avenue Saint-Rémy

The old capital of France's coal country may not possess the charms of its neighbours Sarrebruck and Sarreguemines, but Forbach has its share of fascinating architectural diversity and many modern features that may not be evident to the casual passer-by. Among the overlooked treasures are Le Carreau, a theatre offering an eclectic line-up of lively performances, and Le Paris, the cinema across the street. You're really missing out if you don't take a second look at these two. They were designed by the same architect, Guy Bourdon, and built a few years apart – between 1978 and 1982 – on either side of Avenue Saint-Rémy as part of the same cultural complex. Covered in original mosaics, their façades will take you right back to the ’80s. When the sun is out, the dazzling white buildings look particularly Californian. All that's missing are the palm trees. Close your eyes: welcome to Los Angeles!
