Fancy visiting a nature reserve during your stay in Cayenne? You’re in luck – the French government has created six around this French Guiana city. Among these is the Marais de Kaw, around 80 kilometres away. This wetland stretches along the Atlantic, just west of the mouth of the Approuague river. Until the colonial period, indigenous people were the only inhabitants of the region. In 1819, however, Baron Laussat brought 200 Chinese here in an attempt to develop tea plantations. The experiment failed after a few months, and the Chinese returned home. Now you know why Cayenne is much better known for peppers and chillis than for tea.
