A CHEEKY GARDEN UNDER A RED MOON

Caen

Musée-jardin de la Luna Rossa / 6 rue Damozanne

Walking along the narrow streets of the Haie Vigné district, you may stumble upon a garden hidden away behind some old walls at a dead end between alleyways. This secret spot remained abandoned for 25 years before it became an open-air museum dedicated to art brut. Inside are around 40 pieces created by self-taught artists, comprising installations in human or animal forms, along with curious contraptions made of concrete and other ‘found’ objects. Approach the graceful statues of three women with arms raised to the sky surrounding a lovely pond. Take a good look at the largest one: this is the bather with red buttocks, created by Serafino Enrico (1898-1989), a French-Italian mason from Sarthe who made sculptures in his free time and whose work inspired the cheeky name of this artistic refuge. Jardin-Musée Luna Rossa is open every Sunday from April to the end of October (free entry).
