A HISTORIC GRANARY REVITALISED

Blois

2 place Jean-Jaurès

In centuries past, granaries served as both wheat storehouses and exchange halls. But one by one, these ancient buildings fell into disrepair and disappeared. In 1981, the city of Blois wanted to tear down its hall and replace it with a more modern structure. Demolition was supposed to take place from 12 to 15 June, but leaders didn't factor in the resolve of the group Parlez-moi d'Amour, headed by Jack Lang – cultural minister and future mayor of the city. Movements to protect endangered French monuments sprang up all over the country, including in Nice, Nancy and even Paris. Legal action ensued, demanding that the buildings be classified as historic sites, so saving the Blois grain exchange. Renamed the Palais des Congrès et de la Culture, the former granary is today the undisputed artistic centre of Blois, as well as the site of numerous artistic performances and an ardent promoter of cultural diversity.
