SWEETS WORTHY OF A SOVEREIGN

Biarritz

18 Place Georges Clémenceau

Particularly prized by European royalty and lovers of year-round gorgeous weather, fashionable Biarritz certainly deserves its nickname ‘the queen of beaches and the beach of kings’. Each visiting royal was particularly fond of the Pâtisserie Miremont, which opened in 1872. The king of Spain loved to lunch there, Queen Victoria was fond of its high tea, while her son Edward VII adored a Miremont hot chocolate, and Natalie of Serbia was mad about the caramels – an undisputed house speciality. The melancholy Queen Amelia of Portugal was a constant presence in front of the window that looks upon the ocean... perhaps to forget about her tragic fate for a while. The café’s décor has changed little over the years, and visitors can still admire the traditional signage, which was last replaced in 1880. What a testament to a grand era.
