A WALL OF TINY TRINKETS

Avignon

Rue de la Banasterie (between the well and the rampart)

So you think you know all there is to know about Avignon, do you? The Popes’ Palace, the famous bridge upon which ladies and gentlemen dance... Well, there’s still a very surprising place known only to insiders. To find it, start at the end of Rue de la Banasterie. Next, follow the outer walls of the old Sainte-Anne prison, and you'll come across something that immediately catches the eye. On a section of bare wall you can see nooks and crannies filled with trinkets, photos, drawings, little notes and more. But why are they there? No one really knows. A visual artist claims it as his handiwork, while others say these items are relics left by the loved ones of former inmates. Even if we never truly know how the tradition began, this unexpected curiosity is well worth a detour.
