Angoulême

18 rue Fénelon

With its 72m-long vaulted nave, Byzantine-influenced domes and semi-circular apse, Saint-Pierre Cathedral in Angoulême is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Charente. But nobody could have predicted its curious destiny. The project started in 1110, but its construction was delayed from the very beginning. The cause? Blame it on the Count of Lusignan, who forbade the importation of any water, wood, stones or lime. Not even the craftsmen were allowed to enter the city! The very persistent Bishop Girard II was finally able to realise his dream in 1128. The cathedral would be changed several times over the centuries, which has led to the loss of its original appearance. If your steps ever lead you to this grande dame, look beyond her façade and pay particular attention to the chancel, apse and transept – all the result of the bishop's creative genius.
