Tucked away behind the building at 5 Rue aux Pareurs sits a rather clever little association. Founded on the 4 October 1797 during the French Revolution, the Société d’Émulation d’Abbeville is devoted to learning. The society promotes the humanities, sciences and the arts – with a special emphasis on the history and heritage of Abbeville. For more than 200 years, this grande dame has survived multiple governments and two world wars. Today, the society has its feet planted firmly in the 21st century, and it holds public seminars on the first Wednesday of each month (excluding August and September). The lectures are held in the ancient refectory of the Carmel d'Abbeville on 36 Rue des Capucins, where the stained glass windows alone warrant a visit.
