Discovering Chester's Roman History

Today of the UK's most beautiful historic cities, Chester began its life as a Roman fort, serving as an important military base for more than three centuries.

Whether you're interested in Britain's rich Roman past or just looking for a picturesque city to spend a few days away, it's always a good time for a visit to Chester.

Chester's Roman beginnings
The city began life as Castra Deva, which translates to 'military camp on the River Dee'.

Occupied by a legion of Roman soldiers from around AD48, the camp made use of solid stone walls and towers laid out in a traditional Roman style. The remains of some walls and defence towers are still visible today!

As well as the main camp area, an amphitheatre was built just outside the fort for contests. Disused and rebuilt several times throughout history, the amphitheatre remains were rediscovered in 1929 and reopened to the public in 1972. If you're planning a historical trip to Chester, don't miss a visit to the site.
Chester Castle
Founded by William the Conqueror in 1079, Chester Castle was first built using earth and timber, then reconstructed using stone in the 12th century. The castle sits in the south-west part of the city and is an absolute must-visit whether you're staying for a weekend or longer.
