In Gallo-Roman times, Lyon was located on the abrupt slopes of Fourvière. In this UNESCO world heritage listed quarter, you can visit the impressive Fourvière archaeological park. On the flanks of the hillside, you’ll witness some very well preserved remains of a temple, a theatre and an Odeon. Very close to here, the Gallo-Roman museum exhibits sculptures and objects from daily life in Lugdunum, and displays a reconstruction of the city as it was in the first centuries AD. Before going back to your hotel, don’t forget to take a look at other vestiges: an aqueduct in the rue Radisson and thermal baths in the rue des Farges.
The Fourvière district can be recognised in the daytime by its basilica, and, at night, by its illuminated tower. We highly recommend a visit there at sundown. Experience the best of both atmospheres. Roosting at the top of the hill, the Notre-Dame de Fourvière basilica offers a really spectacular view of old Lyon, the Saone and the city centre. Don’t miss the sanctuary with its neo-Byzantine columns, gilt-work and frescoes. Its nave will certainly take you aback. After a bucolic promenade in the jardin du Rosaire, located below the church, you can see the metallic Tower light up close by. It looks surprisingly like a miniature version of the Eiffel Tower, and it also dates from the end of the 19th century.
