Gracing the roof of Bristol’s City Hall at each end are two majestic golden unicorns. Surprising? Only to those in charge of the building’s construction, since unicorns did not appear on any plan for the building. So where did they come from? It was the architect who, inspired by a holiday in Italy, decided to add in the unicorns. His justification? Unicorns were £600 cheaper than the ornamentation detailed in the plans. For a construction project that cost several million, the savings seemed small. But aesthetically, was the architect’s choice well-founded? Have a look for yourself. Bristol City Hall.
