A GIANT THIRST

A GIANT THIRST

Bristol

Ashton Court Estate, Long Ashton, Bristol

Myths & Legends
It is one of the founding myths of Bristol. The story of two giants, brothers Vincent and Goram, who fancied the same woman, the sublime Avona. To decide between her suitors, she promised her hand to the one who could empty a lake in the region. Overwhelmed by the heat, Goram had the bad idea of quenching his thirst with ale, and fell asleep before his work was done. All the while, Vincent finished the work and won Avona’s heart. In waking, Goram, peaky and regretful, left to drown himself in the nearby Severn River. A sad story? A bit. But since Bristolians have always admired good drinkers, a giant sculpture of Goram’s head has been erected on the grounds of Ashton Court Mansion.Ashton Court Estate, Long Ashton, Bristol BS41 9JN
