BRIDGES SPANNING THE CENTURIES

Bilbao

Ría de Bilbao, Bilbao

Bilbao is a city split in two by the river. On the one side is the Casco Viejo, the old town and historic centre, and on the other the Ensanche, the part of the city symbolising progress and modernity. How best to admire this eclectic blend of traditional and contemporary architecture? Stroll along the river, past Gothic churches, the stunning Guggenheim Museum and bridges that span both the river and the centuries. It’s also worth taking a boat out to the mouth of the Ibaizabal estuary to view the Vizcaya Bridge. A World Heritage Site since 2006, it is considered by UNESCO to be the perfect combination of beauty and functionality, a true symbol of 19th-century engineering prowess.
