JURASSIC CAPE
Figueira da Foz
Monumento Natural do Cabo Mondego, 3080 Quiaios
Cabo Mondego is located on the westernmost point of the Boa Viagem mountain range, three kilometres north of Figueira da Foz. The only cliff point on the central Portuguese coast, it stands around 40 metres high. Classified as a Natural Monument, Cabo Mondego is a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP). This means that the rock strata here marks the lower boundary of a geological time scale - in this case, the Bajocian age of the Middle Jurassic. A ‘golden spike’ marker defines the boundary, embedded in rock some 170 million years old. Visit the nearby Cabo Mondego lighthouse, and enjoy wonderful views of the beaches of Murtinheira and the bay of Figueira da Foz – with not a dinosaur in sight!
