In 2010 St Bridget Basilica in Gdansk became a place of an unusual discovery. During renovation works of the 14th-century’s Penitent Chapel, round underground stairs leading to a crypt filled with skulls were found. However, to avoid damaging the crypt’s roof, archaeologists were looking for its real entrance for over 6 years. Finally in 2016 they managed to access this mysterious room and began the study of the bones. To whom do these remains belong? Why are there so many skulls in one place?
