MAKE FRESH DAILY

Bangkok

Thanon Nikhom Makkasan Road, Makkasan, Ratchathewi, Bangkok

Local Taste
If your idea of a market visit includes fresh meat, vegetables, and an old-fashioned train station, then you’re in luck. In Bangkok, the old exists peacefully alongside the new, and nowhere is this as literal than at the century-old Makkasan train station (not to be confused with newer Makkasan Airport Rail Link station a kilometer away).

Soaring above the traditional railway tracks is the elevated mass transit rail, transporting visitors from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to downtown in less than 30 minutes. Running parallel along the ground are traditional train tracks, on which merchants from nearby provinces bring their goods to sell at the market, everything from whole chickens to household items. Don’t expect cute souvenirs and fancy treats here, but if you’re looking for a taste (and smell) of the local way of life, head to this lesser known market.
