Originally built in the mid-1950s to appease the spirits of the land on which stood the former Erawan Hotel, the four-faced Hindu god Brahma who holds court here is known to fulfill wishes, luring devotees from near and far. (A replica of the shrine stands in front of Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas, but no news of its luck-providing potency.)
It can feel a bit overwhelming for first-timers, but just do as the locals do and make offerings and prayers in a clockwise direction. If your wish comes true, don’t forget to return to the shrine to give thanks with flowers, a small elephant statue, or by dedicating a performance by the resident traditional dance troupe. Next time you’re in the area, drop in. Who knows, it might just be your lucky day.
