At first glance, the place certainly seems like a house of frights. At the very heart of Sao Paulo, steps away from its university, a building is home to 407 different varieties of snakes, among them the most poisonous in the world. This place is the Butantan Institute, and if it is full of cobras, pythons and other serpents, it is for a good cause. Indeed, the Institute is affiliated with the Brazilian Ministry of Health, and is one of the world’s most important biomedical research centres. The serpents’ venom is used here to make serums and vaccines against tetanus, diphtheria and hepatitis C. And against snake bites? Perhaps.
