Salvador

Praça Visc. de Cayru, s/n - Cidade Baixa, Salvador

It is called Mercado Modelo. In this imposing 19th century building located at the centre of the Comércio neighbourhood, not far from the port, you will find everything a tourist would ever want or need: ceramics, jewellery, leather goods, instruments, sculptures and more. But this lively market once had a darker past. In its basement, at sea level, slaves newly arrived from Africa were held here until sale, while the upper floor was used for entertaining Brazil’s intelligentsia, which hosted such well-known names as Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Pablo Neruda. Upstairs and downstairs takes on new meaning at the Mercardo Modelo.Praça Visc. de Cayru, s/n - Cidade Baixa, Salvador - BA, 40015-170, Brazil
