Belo Horizonte

Museo de Arte da Pampulha, Dr Otacílio Negrão Lima, 16585 - Pampulha, Belo Horizonte

In the city of Belo Horizonte stand the first buildings that Oscar Niemeyer ever designed. In 1940, Juscelino Kubitschek, then the city’s mayor, called upon the architect to design the new neighbourhood of Pampulha. In a single night, Niemeyer drew the plans for a casino. This casino quickly became the favourite spot of the upper class, in need of distractions. But in 1946, the fun was put to an end by the government of General Gaspar Dutra, influenced by the general’s wife, which outlawed gambling throughout Brazil. The demise of Niemeyer’s building? Not quite. Eleven years later, the building was transformed into a contemporary art museum. Now instead of losing to the house, you get to take in a bit of culture.Museo de Arte da Pampulha, Av.
