Forget New York, London is the new home of brunch. From amazing American pancakes to proper Full English breakfasts, every brunch dish under the sun can be found in London.
Dishoom
For an Indian-inspired breakfast, you can’t beat Dishoom. With locations in Kings Cross, Covent Garden and Shoreditch, Dishoom always has such a great vibe – and the food is top quality. Try their spicy scrambled eggs – an Irani café staple. The eggs are piled up richly alongside plump pau buns and served with grilled tomatoes, always perfectly cooked and creamy, with lots of fresh herbs, chopped onion and garlic. If you need something to wash away your hangover, try the Big Bombay. This is a beautiful plate of char-striped smoked streaky bacon from The Ginger Pig, peppery Shropshire pork sausages, masala baked beans, grilled field mushroom, grilled tomato and buttered pau buns. Glorious!
Caravan
Simply put, Caravan is the best place for brunch in London. Of course, the secret is out and you might have a long queue on weekends, but it’s totally worth it. Everything on the Caravan brunch menu is worth trying, and the egg dishes are a favourite here. For something simple, their avocado on toast is amazing – the combination of avocado and chilli on home-baked sourdough is divine, and you can’t miss their homemade cornbread. For something sweet, the date porridge with date syrup and banana is like a hug in a bowl. The vibe at Caravan is always fun; expect lots of youngsters chowing down on brunch and drinking flat whites.
The Ivy Cafe, Wimbledon
Recently opened, The Ivy Café, Wimbledon Village, is a friendly restaurant with an all-day café-style menu. They do an amazing weekend brunch and the restaurant boasts a garden terrace hidden away at the back of the restaurant on the ground floor – perfect for a spot of al fresco brunching. Come for the brunch class; Eggs Benedict and chips, croque-madame with Dijon mustard and a fried hen’s egg, griddled buttermilk pancakes topped with smoked streaky sweetcured bacon, blueberries and maple syrup, or the steak and eggs. The also do a killer Bloody Mary; don’t miss it!
Plum + Spilt Milk
For something special, try Plum + Spilt Milk at the Great Northern Hotel in King’s Cross. If you want a healthy brunch, this is for you. They use wholesome alternative grains and milks, natural sweeteners and superfoods, to create classic brunch dishes with a healthy twist. For example, you can get eggs on spelt muffin, paired it with smoked salmon, steamed spinach and a poached egg. The beautiful setting will win you over; the grand dining room is ideal for a posh Sunday brunch, and vegans will rejoice at their dairy-free quinoa porridge made with soya milk, blueberries and almonds.
Lantana
If you’re looking for a taste of the Australian sunshine in London, you must try Lantana Cafe. They do the best corn fritters in London – expect corn fritters, with streaky bacon, fresh spinach, slow roasted tomatoes, served with smashed avocado and crème fraiche, which are a taste sensation. This Aussie-owned cafe serves up brunch food with an Australian touch, with healthy alternatives like gluten-free courgette bread and vegan options. For something sweet and delicious, their banana bread is one of the best you’ll find in London.
