Street food Cardiff
Love street food? If so, be sure to head down to Depot in Dumballs Road, which hosts a weekly indoor street food event every Saturday from 5pm. Housed in a former warehouse, Depot’s Street Food Social boasts a range of local street food stalls, music, cocktails, craft beers and table tennis. It also holds occasional special events, too. Meanwhile, Street Food Cardiff arranges various street food events around the city, including the Street Food Circus, a two-month street food festival that was named the UK’s best street food event in 2015 at the British Street Food Awards, and the upcoming Eat the Street, a celebration of the diverse range of international food on offer in the Welsh capital’s City Road.
Bakes and cakes
Local amateur bakers put their best cakes and bakes forward each spring in the hope of being crowned best baker at the Roath Bake Off, an annual event that’s raised thousands of pounds for local charities. If you’re in the mood for a slice of cake and a cuppa, there are plenty of cafés in Cardiff. Waterloo Tea, which has tearooms in Penylan and the city centre, has an extensive range of loose leaf teas to choose from, as well as a selection of cakes baked in-house. Pettigrew Tea Rooms on the edge of Bute Park sells a variety of teas and cakes baked on site, while Barker Tea House in the High Street Arcade also has a great choice of teas and cakes. Or if you’d prefer coffee and cake, try Uncommon Ground Coffee Roastery in the Royal Arcade or Coffee Barker in the Castle Arcade.
Cardiff market and delicatessens
If you’re looking for foodie experiences in the Welsh capital, visit Cardiff’s Central Market and browse the variety of stalls selling fresh fish, fruit and veg, meat, olives and more. Try a Welsh cake freshly made on the bakestone in front of you or stop by the sweet shop and take your pick of the penny sweets on offer. Meanwhile, Cardiff’s Victorian and Edwardian arcades are home to a number of delicatessens including local favourite Wally’s in the Royal Arcade, which sells an incredible range of sliced meats and cheeses, as well as baklava, chocolates and biscuits. Madame Fromage in the Castle Arcade is also a firm favourite, selling more than 150 types of cheese, as well as chutneys, pies and cakes.
