A Louvre hotel: strolls though Paris’ royal district

A walk through history from your Louvre hotel
The Mercure Paris Opéra Louvre hotel on Rue de Richelieu is centrally located and as such is the gateway to the ancient capital of French kings. Here are our tips for gorgeous trips around the regal Louvre district.
The Musée du Louvre, Paris’ most prestigious cultural highlight
The Rue de Richelieu was named in honour of Louis XIII’s prime minister. Walk down it from your Louvre hotel to step back into what is often referred to as France’s greatest century. It’s just a 15-minute walk to Rue de Montpensier. We recommend you make this little detour as you’ll see the Palais-Royal and its gorgeous gardens famously decorated with columns by Buren. Keep walking and you’ll reach the Place Colette. It has the elegant Comédie-Française theatre and remarkable Kiosque des Noctambules artwork perched above a Metro station entrance. Just a few yards further on are the banks of the Seine. These are a UNESCO World Heritage site. On the Pont des Arts, far from the buzz of traffic, you won’t be able to tear your eyes away from the historic buildings adorning both riverbanks.
On the right bank of the Seine, Paris’ biggest museum is situated in the Palais du Louvre, a royal residence from the Middle Ages to more modern times. It’s impossible to see everything during one visit as the Louvre’s collections encompass some 450,000 artworks. That’s why our team recommends concentrating on three of four rooms, taking in a few much-loved masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa but not forgetting some of the less frequented exhibitions like the Objets d’Art collection in the spectacular 17th- and 18th-century salons. And if you’d like a green space to relax in after admiring such treasures, the Jardin des Tuileries is not far from your hotel.
